AMARILLO BY MORNING
“Don’t tell me what to do!” Grayden slammed both feet on the brake pedal and the red Silverado lurched violently as its tires screamed and poured black smoke. The stink of burning rubber filled the cab as the pickup spun 180 degrees. He head-butted his brother and sent him crashing back into the passenger seat. “I’m driving!”
He hit the gas and the tires shrieked again, spinning and flaming. The truck shot back the way it had come.
The spot they had been headed towards vanished in a wall of fire.
Grayden yanked the truck to the right down an alley.
He stopped.
“What are you doing?” demanded Ty, scrubbing the place on his forehead where Grayden’s skull had made contact.
“Waiting for sirens.”
They both heard the roar of rotor blades at the same time.
“Ae you crazy?” yelled Ty. “Get out of here!”
“What? Out into the open? So we can make a nicer target? You had the same dumb idea when Old Man Reynolds was chasing us!”
“I didn’t know he was behind a tree!”
“Well, this time he’s behind a cloud!”
“Yeah and the cloud’s right on top of us!”
“He doesn’t know where we are! And he’s only got seconds left before everybody is taking pictures of a military chopper with their Androids and iPhones and Nikons! How are the governments of Canada and the US going to explain that? He’s got a window and his window is closing!”
The far end of the alley erupted in orange and black. The shock wave rocked the Silverado with a whump. A second blast cracked the windshield and hurled chunks of hot pavement against the hood and doors with a sound like machine gun bullets hitting home.
Ty grabbed for the wheel again. “He’s walking Hellfires towards us, hoping for a lucky strike! Back up now!”
The street and alley behind them flew apart and the back of the truck flipped up, hung suspended in the smoke and sparks, and crashed back down as the rear window shattered.
Grayden punched his brother in the face, knocking him back into his seat a second time. “That would’ve been a great play, hey, Zero?”
“You broke my nose!”
Heat engulfed the truck.
“Do you pray anymore?” snapped Grayden. “Ever?”
“What good does it do?”
“Most of the good you won’t know about until the fat lady sings and you’re one with infinity.”
“So maybe I’m praying now.”
“So then maybe pray for his window to close.”
“I am.”
Sirens.
Grayden gunned the engine. “Hang on! With cops and firefighters and EMTs racing in here that chopper is gone!”
“You hope!”
“You better hope too! I’m getting back on that highway before the police shut it down!”
Grayden hurled the truck through the black smoke and fires at the end of the alley and out onto a street beginning to fill with people who were shouting and pointing. He laid on the horn and swept past their curses and anger and fear. Two police cars had already parked sideways across the highway. He snapped through a barbed wire fence and drove across a field for half a mile before snapping through it again and bouncing onto the highway heading east. Ty squinted at the sky.
“He’s gone,” said Grayden.

We never know when a minor change in our daily routine will alter the course of our lives. THE GOD OF THE JEWS - @TonyHilling
One of the issues in our world that has truly puzzled me is, what I would term, the mystery of Antisemitism. I say, “mystery” because of two related facts: the Jews are unique in many ways, one of which is that they seemed to have incurred the hostility of almost every other race on earth. For the past four thousand years their enemies include a selection amounting to a Hall of Fame of influential peoples: Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Seleucids, Romans, in the ancient world; and French, English, Russians, Germans and Islamic, in the modern world. Secondly, if you research a “Who’s Who” of the world’s most celebrated persons in the arts and sciences, the Jewish people, in contrast to their small numbers, have an undeniable lion’s share of the pie. So why have they endured so much hatred?
Some may find that the reason for their pillory status is wrapped up in the fact that they are the Chosen People. In that comical scene from “Fiddler on the Roof”, Teviah is lamenting to God about the suffering of his people and suggests gently that maybe God should go choose someone else for a while. There is clearly some envy among the Non-Chosen Gentiles. There is also much racist false accusation. I remember an influential lawyer quoted as saying that there were so few Jewish farmers because one can’t cheat “Mother Nature”, whoever she is! But I believe there is even more to it than this. The Jewish People have become a lightning rod for the rest of humanity. Plainly put, if you love the God of Israel, you will love His Chosen People. And Please note I speak of love, not some careless “people worship” that is blind to their failings and ours. But in these days, when Antisemitism is on the rise once more, I say that the way we treat the Jewish People will decide the issue of which side of the line we are on: are we for the God of Israel or not?
At root, “The Voice of Aedistamen” is a clear allegory of the Jewish People in a fantasy world. The Ma’apone, as they are called, endure much suffering that is at least partially due to their own weakness and sin. Yet the Ghaedsesh-Mor does not forget them. Indeed, He pursues them with covenant love and overwhelms them with His grace. And in volume 7 of the story, we are introduced to a satanic character who becomes their implacable enemy. It is interesting that those in the story from other peoples who help the Ma’apone are the memorable ones, the true unsung heroes. Whereas those who hate them ultimately come to ruin.
The scriptures are clear on this: God has chosen His people, Israel. We who claim to love Him, will love His choices. Conversely, if we oppose God, we align ourselves with Satan. Antisemitism is ultimately demonic.

Being Prepared: Not Just for Boy Scouts Anymore - @Anne_Baxter_C
Confession time: For ten years, at least, I’ve been threatening to do this. I need a list of all my legalities and etc to have for my kids after I’m not around. I’m so great at procrastination, but it’s time!
Have you done this? You know, you don’t have to be a retiree or elderly to get going. Unless you’ve had your eyes and ears closed for the past umpty-ump years, you know even young people die or get incapacitating diseases or illnesses! How well could your friends and family cope with what needs to be done given the information they can dig out of your wallet―assuming, of course, they can find it?
I was given a great comprehensive list of information needed by others at the time I retired, but haven’t done anything with it. This is a nutshell version, but I’m sure you can expand on it. There are also multiple sources online with forms, I’m sure. Eldercare.com has a bunch of stuff.
Personal: Phone numbers and addresses of friends and family. Birth, adoption, marriage, divorce, and death info; Social Security numbers, passports, driver’s license, military records.
Medical: Phone numbers and addresses of primary care physician, dentist, pharmacists, hospital, medicare number, social workers or caseworkers.
Financial: Income sources, financial assets, cash, funds, retirement and pension plans, stocks and bonds, IRAs, life insurance.
Property and other assets: Addresses, deeds. Automobiles, collectibles, boats, household items, inheritances, hidden items, loans to family members and friends.
Liabilities: Utility companies, mortgages, IOUs, credit cards.
Insurances: Life, Health, Medigap-supplemental health, long-term care, dental, disability, homeowners, auto.
Legalities: Wills/trusts, power of attorneys, advance directives, guardianship (pets?).
Important contacts: Attorneys, insurance agents, financial advisors, bankers, clergy/rabbi/religious contacts, accountants, landlords, property managers
Other: Burial instructions, organ donor instructions, safe deposit boxes (plus location of keys), tax records.
Whew! If all that doesn’t make you feel like going to take a nap, nothing will. Blessings on your gatherings, and remember: if this is pretty overwhelming to you, just think what it would be if you left this behind for your kinfolk to wade through! Begin the journey….

In The Declaration, What Came First? God and the Natural Law or the Pursuit of Happiness? By Larry Peterson
There has been much fan fare over the words in the Declaration of Independence, Pursuit of Happiness. It seems that many folks use these three words as justification for their own agendas. The rationale seems to have taken hold that if a person wants something that makes them happy they have a right (as defined in the Declaration of Independence) to secure that happiness.
Let me clarify something; The words, Pursuit of Happiness, are the last three words of the first sentence in the SECOND paragraph of the Declaration. The first paragraph and following sentence read as follows:
"When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them to another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Here's the thing. It seems that all we hear about are the last three words, Pursuit of Happiness. Thomas Jefferson was a very smart man. He placed the preceding words of, "Laws of Nature and of Nature's God", in the very first paragraph for a reason. He, and all the signers, (who became traitors to the British crown subject to the death penalty upon signing) were giving all who read this document the order in which our value system as Americans would be defined. There is a GOD and the Natural Law is His. Therefore, Pursuit of Happiness followed those precepts. God and His Natural Law came first and everything else followed. There was no question about it. That is the way it was for these brave patriots.
It seems that 240 years later in 2016 the Pursuit of Happiness has become the rallying cry for a relativistic society in which everyone who wants their own way screams "I am entitled to my Pursuit of Happiness." The words used in the Declaration -- God, Creator and Natural Law -- are not mine. They come from a man much smarter than I could ever hope to be. How come those words are never mentioned when demanding the Pursuit of Happiness? They are not mentioned because it is an impossibility for the Pursuit of Happiness to trump the Natural Law as given by God the Creator.
The Pursuit of Happiness also involves a common thread that is deeply woven into it. This thread is made up of words hated by many in the year 2016, words such as morality, decency, virtue, honor, chastity, respect and yes, Godliness. These are real words with deep meanings and they do exist.
There are many who hate these words today. They hate them because they interfere with their personal wants and desires. But there are many more who hold them in high esteem. These Americans deserve the Pursuit of Happiness also.

He lives in Pinellas Park, Florida and his kids and six grandchildren all live within three miles of each other. His first wife died of cancer in 2003. He remarried four years later and is now the primary caregiver for his wife, Martha, who has Non-Hodgins Lymphoma since 2011 and came down with Alzheimer's Disease in 2012.

Master Banyonan, surely you cannot be referring to a certain general of the Davarenge Owa’en takes an important step in being restored to his people. He makes an appearance at the Council of The Twelve, the leading elders of his nation. But there are collaborators and conspirators at the heart of the Twelve, and he must tread carefully lest he be caught in the web spun by King Malengus.
THE COUNCIL OF THE TWELVE
An early spring snow was gently falling from an ivory sky, melting almost immediately as it landed, cautiously on the path leading to a rather long, low-roofed structure well concealed within the maze-like, wooded dales of the Ma’apone Hills. Within the structure, twelve men, mostly middle-aged, were seated around a rough table; others in the building were standing, serving or tending a smoky, peat fire.
At the head of the table sat a man of about seventy Seasons, his long grey hair resting on still strong shoulders. Within his wrinkled face twinkled eyes of piercing blue which moved to and fro, surveying calmly yet alertly his eleven companions. He appeared to nod slightly, then closed his eyes and said, “O ever-living and merciful Ghaedesh-Mor! We gather this eve in your name and ask that your precious Breath fill us and give us wisdom to lead your people. We ask for your presence among us as we make decisions for the future. May we follow your path and be faithful in these difficult Seasons. Let us worship you alone. And bring us to walk in new freedom before you. O let us see your deliverance in our lives before we leave Aedistamen.”
Avran Banyonan paused, ending the prayer and then opened his eyes once more. He smiled shortly but with genuine warmth and said, “Thank you my brothers for coming to this special meeting of our council. As you heard, I have prayed for wisdom from the Ghaedesh-Mor. But as Senior Elder of our people, I must also ask for your discernment in matters that are crucial for the continuance of our way of life and the governance of our people.” He looked up at his audience, sensing acceptance from most, hostility from a few, and intense anticipation from all. Then, weighing his words, he continued, “There has come among our people a young man, lately from the Davarenges who claims to be of the Bladow, whose presence may be crucial for our future. I have called you here to …entertain a motion from him to be restored to his people.”
“Who? What is his name?” asked one of the company named Bannikailo.
Banyonan was about to answer when a loud, forced chuckle exuded from Banophil, one of the younger members.
“Would you like to share with us, Master Banophil, the reason for your jollity?” asked military who pretends to have fallen out of favour with the king and seeks sanctuary among us?” answered Banophil.
Banyonan looked at him searchingly, and said, “You seem to be unusually well-informed, Master Banophil.”
“Not at all,” said the other. “It is the talk of the whole City. Rumours have been circulating since the Cold Cycles started.”
“Not in the circles with which I am familiar,” countered Banyonan.
Banophil aped a small, superior smile and said, “Then, Venerable Senior Elder, you should reappraise the circles that you move in…”
“It is well, that the younger member is…informed,” interrupted Bannikailo, an edge developing in his tone, “and moves easily among the Davarenge nobility assuming of course that he knows how to respect his Bladowrete elders.” He looked up at Banyonan then added, “But perhaps our learned Master Banophil would consider sharing with the Council the information that he has to which the rest of us are not privy.”

Avran Banyonan paused, ending the prayer and then opened his eyes once more. He smiled shortly but with genuine warmth and said, “Thank you my brothers for coming to this special meeting of our council. As you heard, I have prayed for wisdom from the Ghaedesh-Mor. But as Senior Elder of our people, I must also ask for your discernment in matters that are crucial for the continuance of our way of life and the governance of our people.” He looked up at his audience, sensing acceptance from most, hostility from a few, and intense anticipation from all. Then, weighing his words, he continued, “There has come among our people a young man, lately from the Davarenges who claims to be of the Bladow, whose presence may be crucial for our future. I have called you here to …entertain a motion from him to be restored to his people.”
“Who? What is his name?” asked one of the company named Bannikailo.
Banyonan was about to answer when a loud, forced chuckle exuded from Banophil, one of the younger members.
“Would you like to share with us, Master Banophil, the reason for your jollity?” asked military who pretends to have fallen out of favour with the king and seeks sanctuary among us?” answered Banophil.
Banyonan looked at him searchingly, and said, “You seem to be unusually well-informed, Master Banophil.”
“Not at all,” said the other. “It is the talk of the whole City. Rumours have been circulating since the Cold Cycles started.”
“Not in the circles with which I am familiar,” countered Banyonan.
Banophil aped a small, superior smile and said, “Then, Venerable Senior Elder, you should reappraise the circles that you move in…”
“It is well, that the younger member is…informed,” interrupted Bannikailo, an edge developing in his tone, “and moves easily among the Davarenge nobility assuming of course that he knows how to respect his Bladowrete elders.” He looked up at Banyonan then added, “But perhaps our learned Master Banophil would consider sharing with the Council the information that he has to which the rest of us are not privy.”

Recently, I listened to a friend preaching on Psalm 121, and his main theme was that David did not compose the Psalms in his old age, but they were written down in his youth as he went through those difficulty years as an outlaw, running from King Saul.
Though we may baulk at the times of hardship, they can also be the most creative periods of our lives. I have had a similar experience over the last while, wrestling with some interior darkness brought on by exterior circumstances. Just short of a year ago, while I was processing these troubles, I happened to be reading the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible. Now, let me inform you from the start that Ecclesiastes is inspired by the Holy Spirit. But it can be tough going nonetheless. It begins with, “Vanity of Vanities! All is vanity.” And ends with the statement that God will bring every act to judgment. Indeed, some believers might think that this is not a good idea to read such a sacred writing when one is borderline depressed. However, I found that the book actually consoled me, because it told the truth about life. Ecclesiastes speaks of the problem of evil. It does not sweet talk or side step the issue. Both within ourselves and without, we encounter darkness. Our lives are played out in a minor key. Ecclesiastes helped me to understand life better.
In “The Voice of Aedistamen”, Owa’en is no stranger to the experience of evil. He has seen the horror of the battlefield, experienced the betrayal of false friends, and has endured the terror of the Silver Mines. In Volume 7 as he prepares to return to his own people, he somewhat naively thinks that the good times are upon him. But he finds out that evil has also an honoured place among his own.
Getting back to Ecclesiastes, this Wisdom Book impacted me so much that I wrote a song based on it. The song is a condensed rendering of the message of this book of the Bible and is entitled, “Kyrie”. Those of Anglican or Catholic background might remember the “Kyrie Eleison” (Lord Have Mercy) at the beginning of the Eucharist. This song clearly has penitential overtones, reminiscent of the Gregorian Chant of my youth, and is a cry from the heart for this generation: that they would weigh the sadness and beauty of this life and turn to Jesus who bore all evil and sin on the cross, and rose again as the Victor Eternal.
Tony (Anthony John) Hilling was born in Glasgow, Scotland of Scots/Irish parentage. He has spent time as a lawyer, priest, non-denominational pastor, and most recently as a writer. His first work, "The Voice of Aedistamen", tells the story of an enslaved people in a fantasy world who struggle for freedom. In their quest they rediscover an ancient faith in a forgotten God who calls forth a deliverer from among them. Tony is also working on another fantasy novel, "The Caves of the Kananaskis", and has written a biblical play called, "Imwas". He and his family now make their home in Western Canada.
