We never know when a minor change in our daily routine will alter the course of our lives. Thirty-something Liz Bertelli had other things on her mind that fateful day she ventured from her usual walking path into New York State's lush forest. Her husband had left for a plaything in her twenties and it had been far too long since the award-winning artist had picked up a paintbrush. Liz doesn't see the mother bear with cubs until it is too late. When the bear charges, she runs in blind panic, falling and striking her head against an old stone wall, knocking herself unconscious. Bruised, but relieved to awaken in this world with the bear gone, Liz spots something glittering in the wall. She tugs at it, releasing an old silver locket and the saga of forbidden love it contains. Uncovering the locket's secrets takes Liz and best friend Rosa Ramirez (a young widow) to a castle (the Castillo de San Marcos) in the romantic city of St. Augustine, Florida. More clues bring the friends to handsome Latino brothers, Carlos and Jack Martín. Sparks fly between Liz and Carlos, who has worked for the President and flown aboard Air Force One. Jack, a rugged Army hero, roars into Rosa's life on a gleaming Harley-Davidson motorcycle. But can Liz, embittered by her husband's betrayal, and Rosa grieving her husband's untimely passing, respond to love's overtures? Answers come on a snowy Christmas day, when an arduous trek through the frigid forest, leads to another surprise.

Ella Font interviews "Shadow" of "The Posse"!

Ella Font: Hello! My name is Ella Font, and I’m sitting here with a mysterious man, The Shadow.
Shadow: [Shakes his head] Begging your pardon, ma’am, but that’s just “Shadow.”

EF: ‘Shadow,’ Is that your last name?
Shadow: When I’m on missions, it’s my only name.

EF: Missions? Well, that does sound exciting. What exactly do you do?
Shadow: The Posse and I dispense justice throughout The South. Now that the War Between the States has ended, there’s corruption in the court systems all over down there.

EF: Sort of like a police force?
Shadow: As well as the judge and, when necessary, the executioner.

EF: [Leans back] You’re not a vigilante, are you?
Shadow: [Shakes his head] Certainly not. We are acting under the authority of the US government, and we take our orders from our general. Our decisions are carefully weighed based on evidence. We’re no lynch mob.

EF: I see. Well, that’s good, I suppose. What is your job in The Posse?
Shadow: I can’t rightly say, ma’am. Our motto is Stealth, Swift, and Sure. Publicizing our specific talents would not be prudent.

EF: [Frowns] I suppose I can understand that. What can you tell us about the sorts of injustices your group takes care of?
Shadow: There isn’t just one kind of mission, but I suppose that’s harmless enough. A freedman was falsely accused and imprisoned for allegedly raping a white girl. Our research shows that was a lie. We’re there to clear his name and right the injustices.

EF: How’s that going?
Shadow: We’re making progress. That’s really all I can say about it.

EF: Is it true that The Posse has access to some amazing new technology?
Shadow: I’m afraid I can’t answer that, ma’am. Secrecy is the way we survive out there.
EF: [Sets aside all her notes and mumbles] Well, then I guess that’s all we have time for this evening. Thank you for stopping by.
Shadow: [Tips his hat] My pleasure. Thank you for having me over.

1865-An interview with Sam Winchester of "The Posse" from "Harper's Weekly"!

Re: Archival evidence of Clandestine Operative Group code name, “The Posse.”

Attached is a recently discovered excerpt from a lost copy of a Harper’s Weekly anonymous interview with a Sam Winchester, 37 years old at the time and third member of the clandestine vigilante group known only as “The Posse.” They were indeed, according to this interview, to have had the tacit approval of the top brass at West Point and in the War Department, these men were given free rein to seek out enemies to the Union and dispense Justice at will, without a writ of habeas corpus and without oversight from the local Federal Marshalls. This brief excerpt was taken from an interview conducted by Harper’s long time political commentator Cornelius Whitman in the aftermath of the War Between the States. The Interview took place on a private rail car between New York City and Washington D.C. sometime in late December of 1865. As far as I can tell, the interview was never published by the magazine. I am including the portions pertinent only to your research:

“I write this interview with a man who’s identity I cannot reveal, but for whom many a citizen owes a debt of gratitude for serving his country during the most difficult period for this great Union.

“As an agent for the Union, Sir, my first question to you is how you became part of this organization for whom you render your special services for our the benefit of our great Union, the reporter inquired.

“First I want to say thank you to you and Harper’s Weekly for keeping my identity a secret and not asking for photographs. The kind of work that I do is secret by nature. I can’t really tell you anything other than I am a graduate of West Point. I am an also an engineer,” Sam replied

“Can you tell us what your mission is and who you work for?” The Reported asked.

“That would violate my oath of secrecy, Mr. Whitman. I can only say that the new frontier is wide open to the criminal element. With the expansion of the railroad the challenges are becoming even greater. The movement of settlers West is bringing with it profiteers of the worst kind from back East.

(Portion of hand-written text is illegible, so text skips to bottom of current page.)

“So this is your mission to eradicate these elements and maintain justice on the Frontier, by any means necessary?” the reporter asked.

“By any means necessary.”

“How does your family feel about your particular line of work?” the reporter press on.

“My family is not part of this discussion, next question.”

“Sorry, you just make the frontier safer for decent families to settle, I just thought I might.”

“You thought wrong.”

“Am I safe in assuming you have the approval of the highest levels of our government for the work you are doing?” The reporter asked hesitantly.

“Of that you can be certain.”

I hope this piece of information is the smoking gun that you were looking for in regards to establishing authenticity of the group known only as “The Posse and the dispensing vigilante justice in the American Frontier with the full approval of the Government. Let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

From the pages of the YA Paranormal series "The Demons of Abadon" by Larry Peterson - a character interview with Charlie Winters!

Meet Charlie Winters:
Background: Charles Joseph Winters (called Charlie by his friends) is a balding, 45 year old, 5 foot six inch, fire-plug of a man who weighs about 200 solid pounds and is as strong as an ox. Charlie, a kind hearted, generous man, will always fight for the “underdog”.
Charlie was born in 1921 on the west side of Manhattan, in the rough and tumble area known as “Hell’s Kitchen”. He lived there until 1959 when he and his wife, Eleanor (Ellie) moved from the city out to Northern New Jersey. They had seen an old Victorian house on the edge of the Abadon Forest and fallen in love with it.

Charlie was a very successful distributor of premium deli meats and supplied delicatessens and grocery stores in all the boroughs of New York City with his products. Life was good and life was peaceful, living in the “country”. Then along came the summer of 1966. That is when Bobbie and Joey Peach came to spend the summer. Like a moth to a flame, it was their arrival which drew Jacob Lightfoot to their front door. Joey and Jacob were subsequently followed by the Demons of Abadon. They hated the innocence of the children and the purity of their souls.

Charlie agreed to this interview because a lot of strange, inexplicable things have been going on since the boys arrived. Charlie and I have a mutual friend, Father Tim Sullivan, and he asked me (for documentation purposes) if I would interview Charlie. So, l should stop talking and start asking Mr. Winters if he can tell us what is going on.
For clarity Charlie will be C and I will be identified as L:
L : “Well Charlie, thanks for doing this interview. There has been some talk of strange goings on up here in the Abadon. Could you tell me about some of these so called, ‘going ons’?”
C: “Now look, Larry, let’s get something straight. If you’re being sarcastic with me or making fun of this situation you can take a hike right now. I ain’t in the mood. This is not funny and these kids are in danger.”

L: “Oh, hold on Mr. Winters. I apologize. I didn’t mean it that way. I am friends with Father Tim just like you are. That’s why I’m here. I am taking this very serious. Please, I didn’t mean anything negative or condescending. Believe me. I did not mean it like that.”
C: “Well, okay then. It started when Father Tim brought the boys up here a few weeks ago. They said a shadow man, or something like that, ran in front of the car and Father had to jam on the brakes to avoid hitting it and the thing ran across the road.”

L: “Sounds scary. Is there anything else?”
C: “Is there anything else? Are you kidding me? That was the very tip of the iceberg. There was this girl named Lily and she was all dressed in white and she brought Jacob here in a thunderstorm and then Bobby seen her upstairs. And then---“
L: “Whoa, Mr. Winters. Please slow down a bit. Who is Lily?”
C: “Oh man, look Larry. This has been going on for a few weeks now. I even had this vicious shadow wolf knock me clear off my porch. I went flying through the air and landed on the gravel driveway. I was all scraped up and bloody.”

L: “Oh my God. That’s unbelievable.”
C: “Tell me about it. I was face to face with this beast as it came at me. Scariest thing ever happened to me—EVER. I was told the force he used was the hatred within him. That was because he could not actually touch me. It was freaky man, very freaky.”

L: “So what is going on now? Has a way to stop this madness been found? What do you do to stop it.?”
C: “What do I DO to stop it? You told me you were friends with Father Tim. What did he tell you? Why did you come here? Why did he send you here? Look, wait right here. I’m getting him out here. This is ridiculous.”
Larry watched Charlie walk into the house. He waited a minute and then said to no-one in particular, “I better leave them alone for a while. After all, I have to figure it out first.”

Larry will be hosting a Facebook Party on the HHP Facebook Page 2/24@11AMEST!

Sound Effects with Feathers-Cindy Koepp

I’ve owned parrots – or perhaps more properly, been owned by parrots – since my 15th birthday. So far, I’ve had 3 cockatiels, 2 pionuses, and my current “turbo-chicken,” an African Grey named Masika D. Greyt.

Parrots who don’t have “issues” take a lot of work. They need their cages cleaned, their food and water changed out, toys to play with, and some TLC from their favorite human. Parrots with “issues” can be an even bigger challenge. With only two exceptions, all my parrots (including Masika) have been rescue babies. I am her 3rd owner since her rescue from a dismal warehouse where she was kept in the dark with no one to chirp at. In fact, I’m really not even sure how old she is. I and her previous owner can account for 30 years, but she’s developing cataracts in one eye, so I suspect she’s a good deal older than that. African Greys can go 80 years or more, so she might have been around on this planet longer than her human.

Parrots are real goofballs, and Masika is no exception. Many people ask me if she can talk, but she’s not much on speech. Sound effects, yes, she is a sound effect machine with feathers. She can do a few short phrases like “Hi there” and “Hello baby!” and her previous owner even heard her belt out “Howdy, pilgrim.”

That’s not all. She can whistle the first few bars of a few tunes, like the opening notes of Doctor Who and Airwolf. One of her favorite tunes is the first few notes of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Her previous owner was a western fan. In addition to tunes, she does beeps: car beeps, fire alarm beeps, microwave beeps, and timer beeps.

Masika is not cuddly. In fact, she only recently decided stepping onto my hand might be safe, as long as I stay still. Sometimes, though, you have to love the critter where they are and help them learn to trust humans again.

In the meantime, her library of sounds is very entertaining.

Have you ever noticed how key scriptures frequently begin with the conjunction, “But”?- Tony Hilling

Have you ever noticed how key scriptures frequently begin with the conjunction, “But”? A good example is Ephesians 2:1-6 where Paul writes:

“And you being dead in your transgressions and sins in which you used to walk, according to the manner of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air…among whom we also lived in the desires of our flesh …and were by nature children of wrath, as were the rest. But God being rich in mercy, on account of the great love with which He has loved us, even as we were dead in our transgressions made us alive together with Christ…”

Another scripture is Jeremiah 31:31-33, where the prophet hears God say:
“Behold the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the House of Israel and with the House of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers…which they broke… But this is the covenant which I will make with the House of Israel…I will put my law within them and write it in their hearts…”

An additional example is 1 Samuel 30:6. David had just returned from the ill-fated sojourn with the Philistines and found his camp at Ziklag in ruins and ashes because of an attack by the Amalekites. His wives are gone as well as the wives and children of his men and the Bible tells us that David and his men wept until they had no strength left to weep. David was also very distressed because his men were talking of stoning him; he had clearly erred in leaving their camp unprotected. The next verse reads, “…But David strengthened himself in the Lord His God.” What a telling phrase! David was probably at the lowest point of his life. He was hunted by Saul, hated by the Philistines, rejected by Achish, the king of Gath, and the Amalekites have just devastated his camp. Now his men want to stone him. David, however, turns to God, draws strength from Him and in a pivotal moment of his life, he sets out after the Amalekites, defeats them and recovers everything that was taken. This event will ultimately springboard him into the kingship of Israel that was prophesied to him over a decade before.

And please note that David was not a perfect man, as his later life shows dramatically. He had already ran to the Philistines earlier as told in 1 Samuel 21:10-15 and barely escaped with his life. Yet he goes back a second time as related in 1 Samuel 27:1, because of fear of Saul; a clear example of using his own wits instead of trusting in God. He made many mistakes and committed serious sins, yet God continued to bless him.

There is a similar theme evident in “The Voice of Aedistamen”. The hero of the story, Owa’en, is continually confronted with the choice of making decisions based on his own perception alone, rather than seeking the wisdom and strength of the Ghaedesh-Mor, the God of the enslaved Ma’apone people. It will prove to be an ultimate test for him too as the events are funnelled into an apocalyptic final battle.

Has there been lately a Ziklag experience in your life? Have you found that you have come to the end of your own strength as you face a giant that looks invincible? David had the answer: strengthen yourself in the Lord your God. Circumstances may seem to be out of control or completely unmanageable. Life may have dealt you an experience that has shattered all your strength and hopes. But God…! Find strength in Him alone.

If you wish to start Tony's series, why not start at the beginning,"The Voice of Aedistamen - Volume 1 - The Child's Arrival".
